Jacob and Noah Garrett are brothers harboring a lifelong resentment towards each other while dealing with their own compulsive obsessions. One is a liberal gay man who forsakes his family and moves to New York City from Tennessee where he travels deep into a labyrinth of sex and drugs while fighting the fear over his homosexuality. The other is a southern conservative who is left at home holding the proverbial family bag. The story follows their loosely intertwined lives through the wild times of the late seventies and the restraint of the Reagan years in which one brother ends up becoming a minister and preaching his doctrine while the other believes there are some things people are born with and not meant to change. Well with My Soul is told through the perspective of both brothers and shows how misguided choices can drastically affect those around you for years to come; and family may be all that one has when looking for peace to stifle the embers that smolder beneath the surface.

Well With My Soul

There are times when you pick up a book that causes you to check your life; this is certainly one of those books. The compelling, thought provoking, and sometimes humorous book is spoken in the narrative by two brothers as they come to terms with their lives and the choices they have each made. Gregory G. Allen brings forward such depth of character in both of his main characters allowing his readers to make a deep emotional connection be it good or bad.

Here's the premise. Jacob and Noah are two brothers both struggling for a place within a family and the world. Jacob is a larger than life gay man. Gorgeous and a successful male model that uses his wiles to attain anything he desires. His brother Noah is the polar opposite, a regular country boy working with his muscles and supporting his aging mother until he finds his love of writing, garnering his own success.

After moving to New York City with his long time boyfriend Jacob embarks on life in the gay community with abandon, his new found celebrity gives him an excuse for all night partying and his many indiscretions. As his drug and alcohol binges take him to rock bottom Jacob realizes he must make changes in his life or become a victim to his excess. In his search for a path he finds himself drawn to God beginning a journey of often painful decisions on his becoming well with his soul.

As a debut novel Gregory G. Allen has proven he is an author destined to make his mark in the literary world. The plot of "Well with My Soul" is well laid out and his characters could very well be your neighbours or acquaintances with the realism each possess. You will find your emotions getting a workout during the course of the book as you follow not only the brother's lives but also those closest to them.

Easily a five star read Well with My Soul had me thinking of my own choices in life and wondering if I was indeed well with my soul.

Well With My Soul eBook Gregory G Allen Reviews

Well With My Soul by Gregory G. Allen tells the story of two brothers, Jacob and Noah Garrett. One is gay, the other straight. One is liberal, the other conservative. Both are on their respective paths in life and as is often with brothers, their life paths take them in different directions. As it true with siblings, they have their own interpretations of their life growing up together and how their parents treated the other brother, which in my family has been very revealing.
The story itself is an emotional ride through the ups and downs of sibling rivalry, filtered through the gay/straight and liberal/conservative lenses. Jacob is lured off to New York by the dream of a successful career in modeling and show business with all the glitz and glamour that goes with it. With Jacob off in New York, Noah feels duty bound to stay home with their mother, hurt by Jacob's rejection of their small town comfortable life in the American South. As the story progresses, the brothers find their paths cross and have taken some unexpected twists, much like life itself.
The story itself is a look not only at the relationship between the two brothers as they examine their own relationship with the other, but also their relationships with the significant others in their lives, and most importantly, their relationship with themselves.
Allen's storytelling is touching, at times very light-hearted and at other times very deep, but always provoking. The story resonated with me in such that I began to examine my relationship with my brothers. A definite must read.
This is a very powerfully written story which captivated me through to the end. It is the story of two brothers' life experiences that differ immensely. Jacob Garrett is the oldest son who leaves his small southern town seeking a vibrant career in New York City. His younger brother, Noah, has issues with his brother, especially being left behind to care for his mother who is succumbing to lung cancer. While Jacob finds some success in modeling, Noah feels like he has his feet buried in concrete, especially when his mother always throws Jacob's virtues at him, trying to set Jacob up as a role model. But Noah knows his brother too well and he realizes that his brother is flawed, at least in his eyes.

Jacob's life becomes meaningless via his deep addiction to drugs, while Noah pines for some semblance of family after his mother passes away, even his older brother he wishes to be closer to, but not while Jacob is lost to drugs. This is the story of one brother throwing his life away, while the other brother lives a life of values, dreams, and personal achievement.

Greg Allen does an exemplary job of presenting each brother's story in their own words. When I first started this novel, I did not like the introduction of arrogant Jacob -- something I had not had to deal with in other stories by this author. But it quickly changed as we glance back at Jacob's quest for independence before leaving home and as to why there is a division between the brothers. This is a very soulful story, told with deep emotion by the author. It deeply moved me as the lives of Jacob and Noah unveil themselves to the reader.
A very memorable story.
